Bring Fantasy to Life - Reading and Arts Forum, Kirklees

Contact organisation: Reading and Arts Forum
Contact person: Ann Cleeves
Email: Ann.Cleeves@care4free.net

Geographical area covered: Kirklees, West Yorkshire

Artforms involved: Reading, Illustration, Dance, Drama, Music

Types of libraries involved: Public children's and adult lending libraries

Project description: As part of Family Learning Weekend we decided to work with 4 artists to interpret fantasy stories which would appeal to adults and children. It was a brilliant day, with parents, grandparents and 9 - 13 year olds taking part. We turned a scene from Northern Lights into dance, improvised a bit of theatre around Harry Potter, composed 3 songs and an instrumental piece to bring a Brazilian folk tale to life and illustrated scenes from Terry Pratchett.

Target audiences: Families in Kirklees.

Outcomes: We hoped to bring a younger audience into Huddersfield Library and to introduce them to new art forms. This was achieved.

Other information: This was intended as a one off event but worked so well that we will repeat it at another library in the authority. We hope to meet regularly as a Family Reading Group
